10 useful WhatsApp tricks for Android and iOS
New text font
WhatsApp has recently added a new font to it’s platform. This should not be confused with the “Formatting texts” feature of WhatsApp which includes bold or italic texts. This is slightly different and is common to both Android and iOS. Here’s how to do it.
Open up any chat you like on WhatsApp. Open the keyboard and type in 3 grave accent (`) characters at the start and end of the word or sentence. This will change the font of your text from the usual default WhatsApp font. iPhone users can find this character by press holding the apostrophe, while Android users can find it in the second page of the symbols.
Multiple WhatsApp accounts
This trick is exclusive to Android users. You can use multiple WhatsApp accounts in a single Android device. This can be done by using the app called “Parallel space”. It is available on the Google Play store for free.
Other than that, you can also use multiple WhatsApp accounts on your PC, Mac or Chromebook by using the “All-in-one” messenger chrome app. Apart fromWhatsApp, this app also let’s you use various different apps in the same window.
Avoid sending “Read” receipts
This trick is exclusive to iPhone users. The “Read” receipt feature is a boon for some, but no so much for others. It’s basically the feature of the black ticks becoming blue when the person reads your text. Now the iPhone comes with the 3D touch feature, which you can use to peek into the message, without opening the chat. All you have to do is just long press on the chat that has an unread meassage. Thus, the person sending you the text will not get the “Read” receipt.
Reply to a previous text
Group chats at times can get a bit annoying when you have to reply to a particular text sent by someone, but there are numerous more messages dropping in. Users often get confused as to who the person is replying to. To tackle this problem, WhatsApp introduced a feature where you can reply to a specific message sent by your colleague in a group chat. To do that, you just need to long press on that particular message and tap on the “Reply” option. Now just type in your reply and send it. It will show you your selected message with your reply.
Hide notification previews
WhatsApp notification previews is a useful and handy feature when you are busy with work and don’t have time to open up WhatsApp and check the messages. But this feature can get annoying at times when your friend is using your phone, he/she can easily see your private messages from the notification preview.
On an iPhone, you can stop the notification preview by going to WhatsApp settings>Notifications>Show preview.
WhatsApp does not come with the feature of turning of preview notifications for Android. For that you need to go to the Android settings>Apps>WhatsApp>Notifications>Block all.
Please keep in mind that this will result in no notifications from WhatsApp on your Android smartphone.
Share with multiple contacts
With the latest update of WhatsApp messenger, you can now share images, videos, GIFs, etc. with multiple contacts at once. This feature was not there in the previous versions of WhatsApp, where you could only share things with one contact at a time.
Another iPhone-exclusive feature in which you can get to know who are your favorite contacts and chat with the most. You just need to go to WhatsApp settings>Account>Storage use. Now you can see the contacts with whom you share the most messages and media.
WhatsApp previously added the feature of “Formatted texts” which you can use to either stylize or highlight certain texts. These formats are “Bold”, “Italic” and “Struck out” texts. This is how it’s done:
- Bold text: *Whatever text*
- Italic text: _Whatever text_
- Struck out text: ~Whatever text~
This is how it would look.
Check delivery reports in Group chats
The one feature that not too many people know about is how to check delivery reports and read statuses of your texts in a WhatsApp group chat. In case of an iPhone, users just need to open the group chat and swipe left on your sent message. While for Android devices, users need to long press on his/her sent message in the group and then tap on the info icon. This will show to whom your message has been delivered and who all have read it.
Unblock yourself from someone else’s account
This is one trick which many of you would not really prefer doing but let’s just tell you about it. If a user has blocked you on WhatsApp for whatever reason, but you urgently need to contact him/her, then you can use this trick to unblock yourself from that account. To do this, go to WhatsApp settings>Account>Delete account. Enter your mobile number and then tap on “Delete my account”. Now uninstall WhatsApp from your device. Now reboot the device. After reboot, go to the Play store and install WhatsApp again. Feed in your number and create your WhatsApp account again. Now you will be unblocked from any account that had blocked you.
NOTE: If you do this, then you will lose all your shared media and messages.
